Liverpool to Mark VJ80 Day

Liverpool is preparing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day this Friday. On August 15th, it will have been eighty years since Japan surrendered in the Far East, marking the end of World War II. A Service of Remembrance is scheduled for 10.30am at the Far East Prisoners of War Repatriation Memorial on the Pier Head, led by The Revd Canon Bill Addy of Liverpool Parish Church. In the evening, iconic civic buildings such as Liverpool Town Hall, St George’s Hall, and the Cunard Building will be illuminated in red, white, and blue.

The memorial will see civic dignitaries laying wreaths, along with a speech by Professor Geoff Gill from Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the University of Liverpool. The Far East Prisoners of War Prayer will also be recited by Meg Parkes, an Honorary Research Fellow at LSTM and the author of Notify Alec Rattray. LSTM has conducted in-depth research on around 4,000 FEPOWs, studying the diseases they suffered in prison camps and collaborating to improve the treatment of service personnel today. Their research also delved into the effects of PTSD before it was officially recognized.

After the service concludes at 11.30am, attendees are encouraged to stay for the two-minute national silence at noon. A moment of reflection will be marked by the sounding of vessel whistles on the River Mersey at 12.02pm, led by Cunard’s Queen Anne. During WWII, Cunard’s ships played a crucial role, prompting Prime Minister Churchill to credit them with shortening the war. From October to December 1945, Liverpool welcomed 22 ships carrying over 20,000 FEPOWs and 1,000 civilians, who were then taken to transit camps in Maghull and Huyton before going home across the UK
