The Entertainer, the UK’s largest toy chain, is undergoing a significant change as founder Gary Grant is passing control of the business to his 1,900 employees. Grant and his wife Catherine started the business in 1981, and it has since grown to include 160 shops across the UK. The decision to transfer ownership to an employee trust means that staff will now have a say in the company’s operations and will receive a share of the profits.
Grant emphasized that selling the business simply for monetary gain would not align with the family’s intentions, which is why the move towards employee ownership was chosen. The Entertainer typically sees most of its profits during the Christmas season, so it remains to be seen if employees will receive a bonus for the current financial year. Real rewards are expected to materialize in the year ending in January 2027, according to Grant.
Under this new ownership structure, both Grant and his family will receive financial rewards as well. This transition marks a significant shift for the toy chain, which has weathered various challenges over the years, including the 2008 financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic, and the shift to online retail.
