Downpatrick: Murdered man Stephen Brannigan was 'much loved'

The community of Downpatrick, County Down, is mourning the loss of a beloved father and grandfather who was tragically murdered on Sunday. The victim, identified as Stephen Brannigan, was found dead at a house in Marian Park, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old man on suspicion of murder. Police are investigating a possible connection to an attack on a priest at St Patrick’s Church in the town.

Described in a death notice as a “dearly beloved” father, Mr. Brannigan leaves behind two daughters and six grandchildren. The close-knit housing estate of Marian Park, where the tragedy occurred, has been deeply affected by the loss. Despite the removal of the outer police cordon, a somber atmosphere lingers around the property where the victim was discovered.

Local councillor Conor Galbraith remembered Mr. Brannigan as a “quiet lad” who was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors.
