Fr John Murray, a priest in Downpatrick, was targeted in a brutal attack before his final Mass on Sunday. A 30-year-old man is currently being detained on suspicion of murder in connection with a death in Marian Park. This incident may be linked to the assault on Fr Murray in St Patrick’s Church.
The assault took place as Fr Murray was preparing to lead the service. He was struck on the head with a bottle by a man who then fled the scene. Fr Murray is currently in a serious condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The attack has been described as shocking and brutal by Detective Chief Inspector McBurney.
The Bishop of Down and Connor, Alan McGuckian, visited Fr Murray’s family at the hospital following the attack. Fr Eddie McGee, a fellow priest, expressed disbelief at the violent events and conveyed his condolences to all those affected. He praised Fr Murray as a well-respected figure within the community, noting his dedication even in his impending retirement.
A large gathering convened at St Brigid’s Church for a vigil in honor of Fr Murray.
