A massive gorse fire on Arthur’s Seat in the heart of Edinburgh is currently being fought by firefighters. The fire was observed rapidly spreading across the hill in Holyrood Park, prompting police to advise people to steer clear of the area. Once the alarm was raised at approximately 16:05, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched four appliances and specialist resources to the scene. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties as of yet.
During the Hibernian v Kilmarnock match, spectators were cautioned to avoid the Willowbrae, Duddingston, and Holyrood areas when departing the Easter Road stadium. Eyewitness accounts indicate that individuals were exiting Arthur’s Seat as the fire extended, resulting in a significant portion of Holyrood Park being blocked off to pedestrians.
Arthur’s Seat, near Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, is a popular spot for both tourists and locals to ascend and enjoy panoramic views of the city. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service explained, “Members of the public no longer need to alert our operations control room about this fire, as we are receiving a number of calls to this incident.”(QIcon Karen Clough caption: A fire spreads across a hill emitting lots of grey smoke)
Nick Brice, a Brighton native, expressed his fear upon noticing the flames spreading as he descended the hill. He recounted his experience to BBC Scotland News, saying, “We could see this little plume of smoke on the ridge at the far side and it just got bigger and bigger.” Urging people to turn back, Mr. Brice emphasized, “Now the whole hillside is covered in flames and smoke coming down over the path we walked.”(Icons Nick Brice caption: Nick Brice spotted the fire spreading on his way down Arthur’s Seat)
A vast plume of smoke has wafted over the city during one of its busiest weekends, coinciding with the hustle and bustle of the Edinburgh festivals. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has released multiple wildfire alerts this year, attributing them to the remarkably warm and dry summer the country has been experiencing. The widespread water scarcity in Scotland in May was the most severe since 1964, as noted by Scottish Water. This recent incident follows a series of wildfires in the Highlands, considered to be the largest the country has ever faced. In a previous occurrence in February 2019, firefighters battled through the night to extinguish a significant gorse fire on Arthur’s Seat, which consumed approximately 800 square meters on the Salisbury Crags
