A selection of items related to the infamous London gangsters, the Kray twins, will be up for auction soon. This includes a gun licence issued to gangster Ronnie Kray, letters penned by his twin Reggie while in prison, and their brother Charlie’s ring. The auction will be conducted by Bearnes, Hampton, and Littlewood in Exeter, and the items are being sold by Dean Buffini, the stepson of Charlie Kray, following the passing of his mother, Diane, who was partnered with Charlie Kray for 27 years.
One of the notable items up for auction is a four-page letter that Reggie Kray wrote to his mother from Brixton prison in 1969. In the letter, Reggie expressed his joy in seeing his parents during their recent visit and complimented his mother on her suit. He also shared details about his life in prison and advised his mother to use honey instead of sugar in her tea for health reasons. Additionally, Reggie discussed a woman named Coral or Carol, possibly Carol Skinner, who rented a flat where Reggie Kray committed a crime.
Another intriguing item is a letter penned by Reggie from Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight to his twin brother Ronnie in 1982. In this letter, Reggie mentioned the restrictions on his correspondence due to prison rules and expressed his inability to write frequently. The collection also includes various photographs, business cards, and letters of condolence to the twins after their mother’s passing. The auction is expected to draw significant interest from collectors and those intrigued by the darker aspects of history.
Auctioneer Brian Goodison Blanks emphasized the historical significance of these pieces, noting the impact the Kray twins had on London’s history and culture in the 1960s. He stated that while valuing the collection was challenging, the entire set is anticipated to fetch over £10,000, with the gun licence alone estimated to be valued between £5,000 to £8,000. The auction for these intriguing pieces is scheduled to take place on 12 and 13 August, offering a unique opportunity for interested buyers to own a piece of this infamous criminal history
