British man arrested in US accused of trying to drown daughter-in-law in pool

A man from the United Kingdom is facing charges of attempted murder after an incident at a resort in Florida where he allegedly tried to drown his daughter-in-law in a swimming pool. Mark Gibbon, 62, was vacationing with his family at the Solterra Resort in Davenport when a disagreement arose concerning his grandchildren, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman, who is 33 years old, reported that Mr. Gibbon from Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire pushed her head underwater multiple times, preventing her from breathing. As a result, he has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery.

Sheriff Grady Judd expressed disappointment in a statement, emphasizing the importance of all visitors, regardless of their origin, to respect the laws and norms of the community while in Polk County. He warned that Mr. Gibbon may face a longer stay in Florida than intended due to his inability to control his anger during the incident.

During the altercation at the resort’s swimming pool, the woman and Mr. Gibbon started arguing about the grandchildren. A young girl intervened by jumping into the pool in an effort to stop the alleged drowning, with further assistance coming from two neighboring sisters who notified the authorities. Mr. Gibbon was detained by law enforcement and taken into custody at Polk County Jail following the incident
