Storm Floris clear up after power cuts and travel disruption

The aftermath of Storm Floris in Scotland is causing ongoing disruptions following the issuance of an amber weather alert. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is tirelessly working to restore power after approximately 50,000 households were left without electricity. Network Rail teams are also working tirelessly to clear routes that were obstructed by fallen trees due to 80 mph gusts across Scotland.

According to SSEN, Storm Floris is being described as the most destructive summer storm in recent memory, affecting thousands of properties across the Highlands, Moray, and Aberdeenshire. By Monday night, around 9,000 homes had been reconnected, with efforts in place to restore power to an additional 43,500 homes. In affected areas, free hot food and drinks are being provided while homes await reconnection.

Network Rail faced various storm-related incidents, such as trees falling on overhead lines in locations like King’s Park in Glasgow, Cornton near Stirling, and Bishopton near Paisley. This has resulted in ongoing train disruptions as safety checks are conducted on Tuesday morning. The storm has also led to flight and ferry suspensions across Scotland, urging people to avoid unnecessary travel.
