Northern Ireland experienced severe winds as Storm Floris made landfall on Monday morning. The storm resulted in the cancellation of several flights to and from Belfast City and Dublin Airports. In the Republic of Ireland, thousands were left without power, with the largest outages occurring in the west and north-west regions of the country. A yellow weather warning for strong winds was issued starting from 06:00 BST and is set to remain in effect until 00:00.
The UK is also facing weather warnings, with most of Scotland under an amber warning. Wind speeds of up to 59mph (94km/h) were recorded in Eglinton and Magilligan in County Londonderry, Ballypatrick in County Antrim reported 56mph (90km/h), and Castlederg in County Tyrone experienced winds of 53mph (85km/h). Despite some localized power outages in Northern Ireland, the storm has not led to any widespread disruptions, according to NIE.
Storm Floris marks the first storm to hit Ireland and the UK since Storm Éowyn in January. The previous storm prompted a rare red warning for Northern Ireland, as well as the first red alert for the entire island of Ireland.
In response to the storm, several flight cancellations were reported, affecting routes between Belfast City Airport and various destinations including Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford, Cardiff, Glasgow, Southampton, and Manchester. Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight statuses. Additionally, Emerald Airlines cancelled six flights scheduled at Dublin Airport for Monday, impacting services to and from Donegal and the return trip to Leeds Bradford. Met Éireann issued yellow wind and rain warnings for several counties in the Republic of Ireland, cautioning residents about potential hazardous travel conditions due to heavy rain and fallen trees.
