A tragic incident occurred at Sgwd y Pannwr falls at Bannau Brycheiniog when a 27-year-old man, Mohananeethan Muruganantharajah, lost his life while saving his young nieces who were in distress in the water. Mohan, from Swansea, was visiting the picturesque location with his extended family in September 2023. According to South Wales Central area coroner Patricia Morgan, Mohananeethan bravely assisted his family members to safety when they found themselves in trouble. Tragically, during his rescue efforts, he was pulled under the water and did not resurface. The shopkeeper’s untimely death was recorded as an accident by the coroner, highlighting the selfless and heroic actions he took to protect his loved ones.

Described as a “brother figure to everyone” in a heartfelt family tribute, Mohananeethan was hailed as a hero by those who contributed to an online fundraising campaign that raised nearly £3,000 in his honor. The Sri Lankan-born pilot saved his nieces from the treacherous waters, but ultimately became trapped under a ledge himself after ensuring their safety.
