At Jersey’s Magistrates’ Court, Advocate David Steenson, a defense lawyer, has been sentenced to seven months in jail for driving away from a crash while under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on La Route de St Jean when Steenson, 57, drove his Jaguar for over a mile with his front wheel scraping along the road at a 90-degree angle after colliding with a white mini cooper. This offense occurred just 10 days after Steenson completed a community service sentence for assaulting a taxi driver in 2024, which was also alcohol-related.
Steenson pleaded guilty to four driving offenses, including drink-driving, failing to stop and report an accident, and two counts of dangerous driving. His lawyer expressed to the court that Steenson is “deeply ashamed” of his actions. The collision caused the driver of the white mini cooper to suffer from whiplash and experienced difficulty sleeping since the accident, highlighting the impact of Steenson’s reckless behavior.
Despite Steenson’s professional achievements, the court emphasized the severity of his actions and the need for immediate imprisonment. The relief magistrate, Tan Ikram, a UK judge, stated that Steenson’s offenses were so serious that there was no alternative but to sentence him to jail. Additionally, Steenson was suspended from driving for 30 months and has sought professional help to address his relationship with alcohol since the incident.
