Man, 76, arrested as Stathern summer camp children fall ill

A man, 76, has been taken into police custody on allegations of administering poison after several children fell ill at a summer camp in Leicestershire. The incident took place at Stathern Lodge, where eight children were transported to the hospital on Sunday after feeling unwell. Thankfully, all of the children have been discharged following treatment.

Law enforcement officers, along with the East Midlands Ambulance Service, responded to reports of the children’s condition at the camp on Canal Lane. The arrested man is being held on suspicion of administering poison or a noxious substance with the intent to harm. The investigation is ongoing, and the man remains in custody.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently looking into how the situation was handled by Leicestershire Police. After assessing the events, the IOPC has decided to independently investigate the matter further, focusing on whether there were any professional misconduct or delays in the police response to the incident. The East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s major incident team is leading the investigation.

Det Insp Neil Holden, the lead investigator, acknowledged the distress the event may have caused for families and the community. Resources from various agencies, including children’s services, are working together to ensure the safety and well-being of all the children involved. A dedicated major incident public portal has been set up for anyone with information related to the case.
