Gazan boy first to be treated in UK for war injuries

Majd Shaghnobi, a 15-year-old boy from Gaza, can no longer eat, speak, or smile as he used to due to injuries sustained in a tank shell explosion. Despite his limitations, he arrived at London’s Heathrow airport from Cairo, accompanied by his mother, brother, and little sister. Majd expressed his happiness at being in England for medical treatment following the incident last year.

The tank shell explosion in the Kuwaiti area of northern Gaza last year left Majd with a shattered jawbone and leg injuries. Despite being initially thought dead, he received life-saving treatment in Gaza and later traveled to Egypt for further medical care. Now, he is in the UK for surgery at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London to restore the function of his face.

The arrival of Majd in the UK was made possible by Project Pure Hope, a group of volunteer medical professionals who facilitate treatment for injured and sick Gazan children in the UK. The project, funded by private donations, aims to provide critical medical care to children impacted by the conflict in Gaza. Majd’s medical team, which includes craniofacial, plastic, and orthodontic surgeons, will work tirelessly to improve his quality of life through reconstructive surgery.

In another instance, Rama and Ghena, two girls with lifelong medical conditions, were able to undergo privately funded operations in the UK with the efforts of the volunteer group. Both girls, evacuated to Egypt from Gaza, received necessary medical treatment in London, improving their conditions. However, concerns remain about their family members still struggling in Gaza, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region
