Allan Ahlberg, celebrated children's author, dies aged 87

Children’s author Allan Ahlberg passed away at the age of 87, as confirmed by his publisher Penguin Random House. During his career of more than five decades, he wrote a total of 150 books, including popular titles like The Jolly Postman, Funny Bones, Peepo! and the award-winning Each Peach Pear Plum. Many of his beloved works were the product of collaborations with his wife Janet, who was an acclaimed illustrator, and together they managed to sell millions of copies worldwide.

Fellow children’s author Michael Rosen paid tribute to Ahlberg, referring to him as a “pioneer of great children’s literature” and noting his clever, funny, and wise writing. Francesca Dow, head of children’s literature at Penguin Random House, described Ahlberg as an extraordinary author and highlighted the timeless quality of his books, which have been hailed as ‘mini masterpieces’. Dow also expressed the sentiment that Allan’s works will continue to be cherished by children and families for generations to come.

Ahlberg’s legacy continues through his surviving family members, including his wife Vanessa, daughter Jessica, and stepdaughters Saskia and Johanna. His journey began in Croydon in 1938, where he was raised by adoptive parents in Oldbury. Before pursuing a career as an author, Ahlberg worked in various professions such as a postman, plumber, and gravedigger, later transitioning to teaching after studying at Sunderland Teacher Training College. His partnership with Janet resulted in the publication of their first book, Here are the Brick Street Boys, in 1975, followed by a string of successful titles including Burglar Bill and The Jolly Postman, which garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. His refusal of a lifetime achievement award sponsored by Amazon in 2014, due to the company’s controversial tax practices, further showcased his integrity as an author
