Donald Trump wrapped up his four-day trip to Scotland with a parting shot at former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, calling her a “terrible first minister.” Speaking to journalists on Air Force One, Trump praised Scotland’s current first minister, John Swinney, but made it clear he had little respect for the woman who came before him.
Swinney had a two-hour dinner with Trump on Monday night, where he advocated for an exemption for Scotch whisky from US trade tariffs. However, Trump mentioned to reporters on the aircraft that tariffs were not a significant topic of discussion during their meeting. Despite this, Trump expressed his admiration for Swinney, contrasting it with his lack of respect for Sturgeon.
Sturgeon had publicly criticized Trump after his election in 2016, calling his comments and behavior “abhorrent.” She served as first minister for over eight years before stepping down, with Humza Yousaf taking over until Swinney assumed the role in May 2024. A source close to Sturgeon highlighted Trump’s history of disrespect towards women, adding that the sentiment was mutual.
Trump departed Scotland after his private visit to his golf resorts in Ayrshire and Aberdeenshire, where he opened a new course. In addition to meeting with Swinney, Trump also had discussions with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and reached a new tariff agreement with EU commission president Ursula Von der Leyen
