Council calls on the Government to introduce Hillsborough Law

In a unified effort, all political parties in Liverpool have come together to support a cross-party motion that will lead to the council reaching out to the Government to push for the implementation of the Hillsborough Law. The motion highlights the disappointment felt by the council due to the Government’s failure to bring forth the Hillsborough Law, missing the commitment made to introduce the bill before the 36th anniversary of the disaster. The council expresses gratitude towards Ian Byrne for reintroducing the Hillsborough Law to Parliament, as well as the group of MPs who supported this initiative, which includes Kim Johnson, Paula Barker, Siân Berry, Tom Morrison, and Sorcha Eastwood.

Reaffirming their unwavering support for the original Hillsborough Law drafted in 2017, the council emphasizes the importance of not accepting any replacement or watered-down versions of the legislation. The council insists that only the full Hillsborough Law should be brought forward, which includes a legal duty of candor on public authorities and officials to cooperate truthfully with official investigations and inquiries. Additionally, the council demands that victims of disasters or state-related deaths be granted equal legal representation during inquests and inquiries through publicly funded legal aid, putting an end to unlimited legal spending by public bodies.

As part of their resolution, the council has instructed the Chief Executive to draft a letter to the Prime Minister, cosigned by the Leader and Leaders of Political Groups, to reaffirm the council’s steadfast position in advocating for the Hillsborough Law. The motion was officially approved during a council meeting held on Wednesday, 30th July, highlighting the council’s unity and determination in pursuing this significant legislation
