A valuable piece of art by the renowned Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dali has been discovered during a house clearance in Cambridge. The painting has been confirmed as an original work and is estimated to be worth up to £30,000, despite being initially purchased for just £150.
An anonymous art dealer acquired the mixed media piece and it will be put up for auction in October. Gabrielle Downie, an associate at Cheffins auctioneers, expressed the honor of handling such a significant rediscovery of a piece by one of the most famous artists in the world and the mastermind behind Surrealism.
The art dealer who acquired the painting found out that it had previously been offered for sale at Sotheby’s in the 1990s with full attribution to Dali. This rediscovery is considered rare in the modern art world and holds great value for Dali scholars, according to Ms. Downie. The painting, titled Vecchio Sultano, was created using watercolor paint and felt tip, depicting a scene from The Arabian Nights, a project that Dali undertook for a wealthy Italian couple, Giuseppe and Mara Albaretto.
The couple initially wanted Dali to illustrate a bible in 1963, but the artist opted to illustrate Middle Eastern folktales instead. Out of the intended 500 works, only 100 were completed before the project was abandoned. It is believed that the painting in question was part of the batch of 50 works that were retained and later lost by the publishers. Certified as authentic by Dali expert Nicolas Descharnes, the painting will be up for sale at Cheffins on 23 October with an estimated value of £20,000 to £30,000
