BBC reunites with Met Office for weather forecasts

The BBC and the Met Office are set to join forces once again for weather forecasts and climate updates, marking a reunion after an eight-year hiatus between the two organizations. This new partnership, announced recently, aims to deliver the most reliable and accurate weather service to the people of the UK, as stated by the corporation. Since September 2017, the BBC has been sourcing its weather data from the Dutch MeteoGroup, which was later acquired by the US company DTN.

BBC director general Tim Davie highlighted the significance of weather in people’s lives, calling it the UK’s favorite conversation and emphasizing its importance to audiences worldwide. He expressed the intention for the BBC’s renowned journalism to collaborate with the Met Office’s weather and climate intelligence, translating scientific data into compelling stories to help individuals make informed decisions regarding the weather. The partnership does not involve any new job announcements or cuts, indicating a non-commercial relationship focused on public service.

Penny Endersby, CEO of the Met Office, shared her excitement about rekindling the collaboration with the BBC, emphasizing the critical role of weather information in assisting people with planning, safety, and staying informed in the face of a changing climate. Notably, in 2022, the UK experienced a national emergency declaration due to a red extreme heat warning, a first as temperatures soared to 40C (104F). The Met Office, renowned for its expertise in climate science, aims to expand its reach through this renewed partnership with the BBC to ensure more individuals benefit from essential weather updates
