In Aberdeenshire, a woman named Sophie-Leigh Gemmell has been given a community payback order after allowing a girl under the age of 10 to drive a car through the village of Crimond. Gemmell, 32, admitted to culpable and reckless conduct when footage of the incident surfaced. The young girl was seen driving the car barefoot in inclement weather on July 10th of the previous year.
At Peterhead Sheriff Court, Gemmell was sentenced to 134 hours of unpaid work in the community, a reduction from the initial 200 hours due to her guilty plea. The incident, which was captured in a video lasting about a minute, showed the child driving in the dark, operating the vehicle’s wipers and indicators, and struggling to see over the steering wheel. Gemmell could be heard cheering in the background while the child attempted to drive.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the child’s bare feet were visible as music, including songs by the Sugababes, played in the car. Gemmell, a resident of Crimond, was observed encouraging the child even as it became apparent that the young driver was having difficulty seeing over the steering wheel. The court also heard Gemmell’s reaction when police arrived at her residence, with her acknowledging the wrongdoing by stating, “I shouldn’t have done it.”
Following Gemmell’s admission of culpable and reckless conduct in allowing a child to drive a motor vehicle in hazardous conditions, Sheriff Alan Sinclair characterized her actions as “reckless in the extreme.” Despite Gemmell expressing genuine remorse and a desire to apologize, the court emphasized the seriousness of her actions and stressed the fortunate outcome that no serious consequences had arisen. Gemmell was instructed to complete her unpaid work within a 12-month period as part of her sentencing
