Tai Woffinden rides speedway bike for first time since crash

Three-time world champion Tai Woffinden recently got back on his speedway bike after a serious crash in Poland earlier this year. The 34-year-old rider from Scunthorpe had to be put into a medically induced coma in March following an accident during a race where he hit a fence behind a protective barrier. In a video shared on social media, Woffinden was seen at an empty Olympic Stadium in Wroclaw, riding around the track for the first time since the incident.

Despite facing significant challenges in the last four months, Woffinden expressed his determination by stating, “The last four months have been the biggest challenge of my life, but like I do with everything, I get knocked down, get straight back up, and keep on charging.” He also mentioned looking ahead to the future, saying, “All eyes on 2026.” The return to the bike comes after Woffinden had previously voiced uncertainty about whether he would ever ride again following the crash.

Following the accident, Woffinden was airlifted to the hospital and underwent surgery, resulting in a double break in his right leg, a broken back, broken shoulder, multiple broken ribs, a punctured lung, a fractured arm, and extensive blood loss. Despite the severity of his injuries, Woffinden remains Great Britain’s most decorated rider, having won Grand Prix world titles in 2013, 2015, and 2018, with runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2020. His return to the track marks a significant milestone in his recovery and showcases his resilience as a champion in the sport
