The extended waiting period to speak with his parents, who are currently being held hostage in Iran, has been described as “intolerable” by Joe Bennett. The son of Lindsay and Craig Foreman expressed frustration after being promised a call to his parents by the Foreign Office, only for it to not materialize after more than 200 days without contact. The Foreman couple was arrested in January during a world trip and have since been charged with espionage, a claim vehemently denied by their family.
Mr. Bennett voiced concerns about the lack of communication with his parents, lamenting the uncertainty surrounding their well-being and state of mind since their arrest. The family has been given only “vague reassurances through officials,” leaving them in the dark about the condition of the 52-year-old couple from East Sussex. The situation has been described as unbearable by Mr. Bennett, who called on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy to intervene on behalf of his parents.
Scottish National Party MP Brendan O’Hara, vice-chair of the all-parliamentary group for arbitrary detention and hostage affairs (APPG), highlighted the plight of the Foreman couple as innocent victims caught in a geopolitical power struggle between western states and Iran. Drawing parallels to other hostage situations, such as that of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, O’Hara likened the Foremans to “bargaining chips” in international relations.
