A strict security operation has been initiated as Donald Trump commences a four-day private trip to Scotland. The US president landed at Prestwick Airport on Friday evening and chose to reside at his lavish golf resort, Trump Turnberry in South Ayrshire. Donning a white “USA” cap and accompanied by his second son Eric, he began a round of golf at about 10:00 on his first morning at the resort. Trump is scheduled to hold meetings with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney over the next few days, in addition to unveiling a new 18-hole course at his Aberdeenshire estate.
Expressing his delight at being in Scotland, the president has commended the leaders of both governments. However, hundreds of protesters gathered in Aberdeen and Edinburgh to voice their disapproval of Trump’s visit, many brandishing signs referencing a derogatory slogan popularized by the late comedian Janey Godley in 2018. Concerns about the overall costs and staffing impacts of the visit have been raised by police representatives, questioning the scale of the visit and its security ramifications.
Upon Trump’s arrival at Prestwick, he was greeted by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray and Warren Stephens, US Ambassador to the UK, before embarking on a motorcade consisting of more than two dozen vehicles to Trump Turnberry. The vicinity around the resort has been cordoned off, with multiple road closures and security sweeps taking place, managed by police and military personnel. A security checkpoint has been established outside the hotel, and a substantial fence has been erected around the golf course.
While Turnberry remains under tight security, golfers have been permitted to use the Ailsa course amid gusty conditions. Drones and helicopters have been observed circling the area. Trump enjoyed his golf game with an entourage of 15 golf buggies, including his son Eric. A round of golf at Turnberry during the peak summer period can cost up to £1,000. The absence of protesters around the course was noted, with Trump acknowledging photographers gathered on a beach dune for a view as he proceeded to the fourth tee
