Tony Fisher and Justin Dealey, reporting from Cockernhoe, share a heartwarming story about a married couple in Hertfordshire on a mission to reunite a lost white peacock with its owner. Roger, 83, and Bernie Deamer, 81, discovered the beautiful bird in their garden and named it “Snowy” due to its pristine white feathers. Concerned that Snowy may have been stolen and abandoned, the couple took to the internet to find its rightful owner, but to no avail.
Describing the bird as friendly and stunning, the Deamers recounted how Snowy initially landed in their garden near Luton and soon became a regular visitor after they started providing food for it. Despite reaching out to nearby estates and animal welfare organizations, including the RSPCA, the Deamers were unable to find anyone claiming ownership of Snowy. With the RSPB noting that white peacocks are often bred for events and weddings, the Deamers expressed their dilemma of wanting someone to take the bird but also forming a bond with it.
Roger Deamer marveled at Snowy’s behavior, mentioning how the bird wanders around the area and sometimes perches 60 feet up a tree at night, only to return the next morning. Mrs. Deamer expressed concern for Snowy’s well-being in the upcoming winter months, fearing that the open garden with foxes nearby may pose a threat to the bird’s survival. Despite their efforts to locate the owner, the Deamers continue to care for Snowy while hoping for a resolution to the mystery of the lost peacock
