Gregg Wallace: Ex-MasterChef host 'sorry' but says he's 'not a groper'

Noor Nanji & Steven McIntosh, the culture reporters, shared that former MasterChef host Gregg Wallace expressed deep regret for any harm he caused, emphasizing he is not a groper, sex pest, or flasher. In a recent interview with The Sun, Wallace defended his co-host John Torode, asserting that he is not a racist. Wallace was dismissed following a report that confirmed 45 accusations about his conduct on the show, including unwelcome physical contact and being inadequately clothed. Torode also faced dismissal after a complaint about him using a racially offensive term was substantiated, although he claims no recollection of the incident.

An independent investigation, commissioned by MasterChef’s production company Banijay after BBC News exposed allegations against Wallace last year, revealed more than 50 individuals coming forward with accusations against him. Allegations range from groping a MasterChef employee at a party to exposing himself in front of another. The majority of confirmed accusations involve inappropriate sexual remarks and jokes, as well as culturally insensitive or racist remarks made by Wallace. In his first interview post-dismissal, Wallace acknowledged his past remarks that hurt others, expressing remorse for any harm caused.

Wallace clarified that the incident where he allegedly walked around the set of MasterChef naked with a sock on his genitalia had minimal impact, as no contestants were present and only four friends from the show were outside his dressing room. In relation to his autism diagnosis, which he mentioned in an Instagram post prior to the release of the report, Wallace highlighted the challenges he faces in reading people and how autism affects his behavior. The report also covered the dismissal of Wallace’s co-host Torode over a racist language accusation, with Wallace defending Torode’s character as not fitting the racist label.

Despite concerns raised by some women who accused Wallace, the BBC announced that the previously filmed series featuring Wallace and Torode will still be aired as scheduled. The decision was made after discussions with the show’s participants, although no verdict has been reached regarding the broadcast of the completed celebrity series and Christmas special. Wallace has unfollowed Torode and his wife on social media, citing differences in character as the reason behind their strained relationship
