Jay Slater's death accidental due to fall, coroner rules

Emma Stanley reported from BBC Lancashire that a coroner concluded Jay Slater’s death was accidental after he fell down a ravine in Tenerife. The 19-year-old from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, went missing on June 17, 2024, and was found in a remote area near the village of Masca on July 15 after a massive search.

According to Preston Coroner’s Court, Slater had informed his friends that he was lost in the mountains and needed a drink as he tried to walk home for 14 hours following a night of drugs and alcohol. Coroner Dr. James Adeley stated that Slater’s death was accidental without any third-party influence.

During the inquest, Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, described her son as having a “wonderful life” and being a joyous individual to be around. She mentioned his close relationship with his family and the devastation felt by his large circle of friends. Dr. Adeley detailed the circumstance of Slater’s fall in a dangerous area resulting in fatal skull fractures and brain trauma.

The coroner acknowledged that leading up to Slater’s tragic death, his friends had shown concern for him and tried to take care of his well-being. Testimonies indicated that Slater had consumed drugs and alcohol the night before his disappearance. Witnesses recounted conversations with Slater while he was lost in the mountains and the subsequent attempt to guide him back to safety
