Plans for a new school in Liverpool are moving closer to a key milestone with the submission of site proposals to the Department for Education. Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Liverpool, which will be managed by Star Academies, was given the green light in August 2023 under the Free Schools Programme in response to the growing need for more secondary school places in the city. The intended location for the school is on land between Mulgrave Street and Selborne Street.
However, initial plans approved by the council in March 2025 raised concerns as they would have encroached on the African Caribbean Centre’s space, which was deemed unacceptable by the center’s trustees and the wider community. Following consultations with the African Caribbean Centre’s trustees and local ward councillors, the council has committed to preserving the building and its surrounding land, which holds significant historical value for the community.
The revised proposal now guarantees that the land around the community center will remain untouched while still facilitating the development of the new school. The addition of secondary school places at Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy, Liverpool, is crucial for effective school-place planning to meet the city’s obligatory responsibility of providing adequate school spaces for young people in Liverpool. Leader of Liverpool City Council Cllr Liam Robinson expressed gratitude to all involved parties for their collaborative efforts and hopes for support from the Department for Education to progress with the project.
Councillor Lucille Harvey from Princes Park ward echoed the positive sentiment, appreciating the council’s responsiveness to the African Caribbean Centre’s concerns and acknowledging the center’s integral role in the L8 community. By working together to address issues and preserve the center’s site, the community anticipates the benefits that a new school and a thriving community center will bring for years to come
