Truro surgeon accused of fraud over his leg amputations

A vascular surgeon from Truro, Cornwall, Neil Hopper, has been brought before a court on charges of fraud and encouraging others to remove body parts, following a long career of performing amputation surgeries. The 49-year-old appeared before Cornwall Magistrates’ Court in Bodmin, facing allegations of two counts of fraud by false representation and a charge of encouraging or assisting in the commission of an indictable-only offence, specifically grievous bodily harm. Magistrates have remanded him into custody and set a court date for 26 August at Truro Crown Court.

The charges against Mr. Hopper stem from claims made between 3 and 26 June 2019 to insurers, where he allegedly misrepresented that injuries to his legs resulted from sepsis rather than being self-inflicted. Additionally, he faces accusations of purchasing videos from a now-defunct website named The Eunuch Maker between 21 August 2018 and 4 December 2020, showcasing limb removals, and allegedly encouraging Marius Gustavson to remove body parts from third parties. Mr. Hopper, who originally hails from Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, was previously employed by the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust until his arrest in March 2023 and has been suspended from the medical register since December 2023.

While the charges brought against Mr. Hopper do not pertain to his professional conduct, the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust has assured that there is no evidence indicating any risk to patients from his actions. Former patients with concerns about their care have been encouraged to reach out to the hospital’s patient experience team for support. Despite the legal troubles, in 2020, Mr. Hopper was recognized with the Against All Odds award at the Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons.

It is a shocking turn of events for a once-respected surgeon, facing serious legal repercussions for his alleged involvement in fraudulent activities and encouraging harmful actions towards others. The upcoming court proceedings will shed further light on the extent of Mr. Hopper’s alleged wrongdoing and the implications for both his career and reputation within the medical community. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of upholding ethical standards in healthcare and the severe consequences that can arise from deviating from professional conduct guidelines
