After the government’s recent announcement, it has been revealed that they will take on the leading shareholder role in the £38bn Sizewell C nuclear plant project. Taxpayers will hold a 44.9% stake in the venture, with funding also coming from EDF, Centrica, La Caisse, and Amber Infrastructure. Downing Street had already committed £14.2bn in investment for the development of the Sizewell C nuclear plant, located on the Suffolk coastline.
The updated cost of the Sizewell C project was disclosed to be £38bn, a significant increase from the previous official estimate of £20bn. This decision has garnered mixed reactions, with Alison Downes, director of the pressure group Stop Sizewell C, expressing concerns about the reliance on public funds for potential cost overruns. Despite the criticisms, Sizewell C is anticipated to generate 10,000 direct jobs and supply energy to approximately six million homes.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the importance of such large-scale investments in bolstering the country’s energy infrastructure. The government’s commitment to nuclear energy projects like Sizewell C aims to provide sustainable and cost-effective power for future generations. La Caisse will acquire a 20% stake in the project, while Centrica and Amber Infrastructure will hold 15% and 7.6%, respectively. Additionally, French energy company EDF has secured a 12.5% stake in Sizewell C, along with a proposed £5bn debt guarantee from Bpifrance Assurance Export to support commercial bank loans.
