Foreign Secretary David Lammy has expressed profound disgust and horror over the suffering of civilians in Gaza, following the Israeli government’s dismissal of an international statement warning that the situation has reached “new depths.” Lammy described Israel’s response as “extremely disappointing” and condemned the conditions in Gaza as “horrifying.”
The UK, along with 27 other nations, issued a joint statement calling for an immediate halt to the conflict and accusing Israel of inadequately providing aid to the people of Gaza. This declaration came after numerous individuals were killed while attempting to access essential supplies, with Israel rejecting the statement as being out of touch with reality and sending the wrong message to Hamas.

When asked whether the atrocities described could be classified as war crimes, Lammy deferred the decision to legal experts at the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. Expressing his own desire for the conflict to end, Lammy emphasized the need for an enduring ceasefire and revealed that the UK had suspended a portion of arms export licenses to Israel in 2024 due to concerns about potential usage in Gaza. If the Israeli government does not alter its approach to the war, Lammy hinted at further actions from the UK in the near future
