Reported by Bea Swallow from BBC News in Gloucestershire, a mother, Melissa Wilband, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the death of her four-month-old daughter, Lexi, who passed away in April 2020 at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Despite denying the accusation, Wilband was found guilty by jurors in a four-week trial at Bristol Crown Court in April, with police condemning her actions as “despicable” and labeling her as a “habitual liar.”
Subsequent tests indicated that Lexi suffered from brain hemorrhaging due to violent shaking, both recently and on prior occasions. Further examinations revealed numerous bleeding spots in the baby’s eyes, leading to her demise at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Wilband’s ex-partner, Jack Wheeler, testified in court that Lexi had become limp in his arms and stopped breathing. Notably, Wheeler, who is not Lexi’s biological father, was cleared of any involvement in causing or allowing the child’s death.
On the evening of April 12, 2020, Wilband made a 111 call stating that her daughter had stopped breathing while in her bouncer chair. Despite being given the opportunity to hold Lexi before she was intubated, Wilband declined. Addressing Wilband during sentencing, Mr. Justice Saini remarked that the child likely experienced suffering and anguish due to the abuse inflicted upon her. He cited Wilband’s violent actions towards Lexi, leading to severe brain bleeding and ultimately her tragic death, as unfathomable acts of cruelty.
Detective Inspector Adam Stacey of Gloucestershire Police characterized Wilband as a perpetual fabricator, with her deceit beginning even before Lexi’s birth. The jury learned that Wilband attempted to deceive Mr. Wheeler by presenting him with a forged paternity test during her pregnancy. Despite the glaring errors in the document, including misspelling “father” as “farther,” Wilband persisted in her lies throughout the entirety of the legal proceedings. Stacey criticized Wilband’s selfish and dishonest actions, labeling them as despicable for prioritizing her own needs over the well-being of her child
