Four arrested under Terrorism Act during Liverpool pro-Palestine protest

Police in Liverpool arrested four individuals suspected of terrorism offenses during a pro-Palestine demonstration in the city center on Sunday. According to Merseyside Police, a small number of protesters were found in possession of material supporting the campaign group Palestine Action during the march organized by Liverpool Friends of Palestine.

Across the UK, more than 100 individuals were arrested over the weekend in connection with protests against the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organization. Among the four arrested in Liverpool were a 74-year-old woman from Kensington, a 65-year-old man from Brighton-le-Sands, a 28-year-old man from Garston, and a 72-year-old man from Mossley Hill – all taken into custody on suspicion of wearing or carrying articles supporting a proscribed organization.

The demonstrations, organized by the pressure group Defend Our Juries, took place in various cities including Bristol, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, and Truro on Saturday. In Parliament Square, 55 individuals were arrested for displaying placards in support of Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000, while Greater Manchester Police detained 16 individuals for suspected ties to a proscribed organization.

In a crackdown following the vandalism of two Voyager aircraft at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20, which caused around £7m worth of damage, Palestine Action was banned by the UK government. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the proscription three days after the incident, condemning the group for their criminal activities and stating that membership or support for Palestine Action is now a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison under the Terrorism Act
