NI weather: Flash floods in Enniskillen and amber rain warning

Enniskillen in County Fermanagh experienced flash flooding, with parts of Belmore Street and the main road to Dublin submerged in water. Helen Dolan Murphy described the force of the water as so strong that it lifted manholes out of the ground. The Met Office issued an amber warning for heavy rain in eastern parts of Northern Ireland, which covers counties Antrim, Down, and Armagh from Sunday night until Monday morning.

The flooding in Enniskillen was likened to scenes from a movie by witnesses like Ms. Dolan Murphy. She recounted how the downpour began just four miles outside of town, causing widespread flooding. Despite the intense flooding in some areas, just a few miles outside of Enniskillen, there was no evidence of rain. Local police warned that Marble Arch Road, Florencecourt, and Sligo Road in Enniskillen were rendered impassable due to flooding on Sunday evening.

In response to the heavy rain warnings, the Met Office advised caution due to the potential for severe driving conditions and flash flooding. Homes, businesses, and entire communities face the risk of flooding, with power outages and service disruptions likely. A similar warning was issued in the Republic of Ireland for Dublin, Louth, and Meath, with expectations of persistent heavy rain, possible thunderstorms, and challenging travel conditions. The alert in the Republic of Ireland is in effect from midnight on Sunday until Monday afternoon
