East Belfast fire: Officer scalded while arresting knife suspect

In a disturbing incident in east Belfast, a police officer sustained scald injuries to his chest and chin after an unknown liquid was thrown at him while attempting to apprehend a man armed with a knife at the scene of a fire. The situation escalated when firefighters also faced threats from the knife-wielding individual, leading to a second police officer requiring treatment for smoke inhalation.

The chaos unfolded in Coates Row in the early hours of Sunday, following a call to respond to an arson attack. Upon arrival, emergency responders were informed about the presence of a knife-wielding man in an apartment. Subsequently, police officers, including members of the Armed Response Unit, successfully arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Det Insp Harvey confirmed that the suspect has been charged with arson to endanger life and other related offenses. Both injured police officers were taken to the hospital for treatment, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement and emergency service personnel.
