Tall Ships Aberdeen: 'Party city' event gets under sail

Ken Banks, a contributor for BBC Scotland News, reported on the Tall Ships Races Aberdeen, which is anticipated to be the biggest tourist event in Scotland this year. The event has attracted hundreds of thousands of people to witness numerous impressive vessels from various parts of the world. As a prelude to the official commencement over the weekend, Scottish band Deacon Blue performed a harbourside gig on Friday night. However, there is a Met Office Yellow warning for heavy rain in Aberdeen from Saturday afternoon until Sunday.

Despite the weather warning, the city council has assured the public that updates will be provided if there are any disruptions to the event. Organizers have promised to transform Aberdeen into a lively “party city” during the event, which will continue until Tuesday before the ships set sail for Norway. Aberdeen has previously hosted the tall ships in the 1990s, along with other Scottish towns like Greenock and Lerwick, dating back to the 1970s.

The Tall Ships Races Aberdeen is renowned as Europe’s largest free family event, with nearly 50 ships participating in the event. Approximately 2,000 international crew members from countries like Uruguay and Oman will take part in the races. The event aims to foster international friendships and provide sailing training for young individuals. The vessels taking part are categorized into four classes, from large sailing ships to smaller single-masted boats, with the Polish ship Dar Mlodziezy standing as the tallest at 62.5m high.

The skipper of the Norwegian vessel Sorlandet, Captain Tore Skjelbred-Knudsen, expressed his excitement for the event, highlighting its significance in showcasing maritime history and changing the lives of young participants. Aberdeen City Council’s Tall Ships Project Manager, Emma Wadee, expects a vibrant turnout for the event and hopes that the people of Aberdeen will enjoy the festivities and contribute to transforming the city into a lively party atmosphere. Numerous entertainment options are available at Tall Ships Aberdeen, including musical performances, street food stalls, and family-friendly activities. With thousands of spectators expected each day, the event organizers have recommended the use of public transport, car-sharing, or walking and cycling
