Manchester Airport brawl accused 'didn't know' he hit female PCs

A student accused of assaulting police officers at Manchester Airport claimed in court that he was unaware of their gender when he struck them down. Mohammed Amaaz, 20, asserted that he was acting in self-defence or protecting his brother from the officers he hit, including PCs Lydia Ward, Ellie Cook, and Zachary Marsden. The incident occurred on 23 July 2024 when Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers responded to reports of a man matching Mr. Amaaz’s description attacking a member of the public at Terminal 2 car park’s pay station area.

Prosecutors alleged that Mr. Amaaz and Muhammad Amaad, 26, displayed a “high level of violence” towards the police officers during the arrest. While Mr. Amaad also denies the charges, Mr. Amaaz testified in court that he feared PC Marsden would harm him to death during the altercation. The accused claimed that he was forcefully pushed into a ticket machine by the officers, leaving him with no opportunity to comply with their demands.

The prosecution pressed Mr. Amaaz about his actions towards the officers, pointing out that he kicked PC Marsden and punched PC Cook during the struggle. Mr. Amaaz denied knowing he was hitting a female officer, despite CCTV footage showing him looking directly at PC Ward before striking her. He maintained that he believed the officers were attempting to kill him during the altercation, highlighting the chaotic and rapid nature of the event.

At the trial, Mr. Amaaz and Mr. Amaad, both residents of Rochdale in Greater Manchester, faced charges related to assaulting the police officers and a member of the public at the airport. The defence argued that the brothers were acting in self-defence against the perceived threats from the officers. The trial is set to reconvene on Monday to continue the proceedings
