'Gangsta Debbs' – the granny who used her family to run a drug gang

Thomas Mackintosh from BBC News reported from Woolwich Crown Court that Deborah Mason, also known as Gangsta Debbs or Queen Bee, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in a conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Mason was said to have recruited her family members and others to distribute cocaine across south east England, leading to a significant drug operation worth millions of pounds.

The court heard that Mason, a 65-year-old grandmother, orchestrated the distribution of nearly a tonne of cocaine over seven months. Her children, including her daughters Roseanne Mason, Lillie Bright, and son Reggie Bright, along with their partners, were all found to be part of the drug ring. Mason’s lavish lifestyle was funded by the drug proceeds, with extravagant purchases like designer goods for her cat and expensive overseas holidays.

During the sentencing hearing, details emerged about Mason’s sophisticated operation, which involved encrypted communication through the messaging app Signal. Mason worked closely with an individual known as “Bugsy,” making multiple trips to transport drugs and money. The court also heard how Mason’s children were actively involved in the drug distribution network, with Reggie Bright and Demi Kendall running their own drug line in breach of previous court orders.

In total, Mason and her accomplices were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 10 to 15 years. The prosecutor highlighted that there was no indication of coercion or pressure on the family members to participate in the conspiracy. Detective Constable Jack Kraushaar described the operation as highly profitable, luring individuals into criminality for financial gain. The sentencing marked the end of a lengthy investigation that unveiled the intricate web of drug trafficking orchestrated by Mason and her family
