Rachel Russell of BBC News, Yorkshire reported on the sentencing of Farzana Kauser, a mother from Bradford who was jailed for more than 13 years at Birmingham Crown Court for smuggling £14.4m worth of cocaine into the UK from Mexico. Kauser, 54, of Waterlily Road in Manningham, admitted to importing 180kg of cocaine in May. She was apprehended while collecting her four sons, daughter, and daughter-in-law from Birmingham Airport after they returned from Cancun with suitcases filled with drugs.
National Crime Agency (NCA) senior investigating officer Rick Mackenzie described Kauser as a seasoned cocaine trafficker who appeared to be a normal, loving mom to those around her. Despite this facade, Kauser was involved in pushing her children into dangerous situations, destroying their futures. Her youngest son, aged only 17 at the time, was encouraged to play a significant role in couriering drugs into the country.
Kauser collaborated with an unidentified accomplice known as “Uncle” in Pakistan to assist in smuggling cocaine from Cancun to the UK. The drugs, with a street value of around £14.4m, were concealed in suitcases brought by her children. The NCA uncovered that this was the fifth time the group had transported cocaine to Birmingham Airport between August and November 2024.
The group’s modus operandi involved booking short trips to Amsterdam or Dublin without luggage, then returning to Birmingham at the same time as flights from Cancun. An insider at Cancun would bring suitcases filled with drugs, which the family would collect from the baggage carousel and pass through customs as their own. Kauser’s four eldest children admitted their involvement in the conspiracy, while her youngest son and daughter-in-law pleaded guilty to being part of an organized crime group
