Wimbledon schoolgirls' death crash suspect re-interviewed by Met

Following the tragic incident at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon in July 2023, the driver involved in the accident, Claire Freemantle, has been re-interviewed by police. The collision resulted in the deaths of two 8-year-old girls, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, after a Land Rover crashed into an end-of-term tea party at the school. Ms. Freemantle, 48, was initially arrested at the scene but was released without facing charges. However, she was re-arrested in January following a review of the investigation by law enforcement.

During the recent interview on Thursday 17 July, Ms. Freemantle was questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was subsequently bailed until October for further inquiries. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has suggested that Ms. Freemantle might have experienced an epileptic seizure while driving, leading to the loss of control of the vehicle resulting in the tragic crash at the school. Despite this theory, there is no evidence to suggest that she had a history of seizures or had been diagnosed with any relevant medical conditions.

The families of Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau have expressed their ongoing frustration with the lack of answers surrounding the incident. Mr. Sajjad Butt, Nuria’s father, spoke out about the need for clarity, stating, “While we welcome this renewed focus on the case, we will continue to champion the pursuit of complete clarity on the events of that devastating day. The truth must come to light.” The police investigation into the matter continues as the families seek closure and understanding in the aftermath of this heartbreaking event
