UK weather: Amber warning as thunderstorms to bring flash flooding

BBC meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker has issued a warning for parts of the UK where potentially dangerous flash flooding is expected to occur due to thunderstorms and torrential rain over the weekend. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for south-east England, where more than a month’s worth of rain is forecasted to fall in a short period on Saturday morning. The warning highlights the likelihood of fast-flowing and deep floodwaters, leading to disruptions in road and transport systems, as well as power outages.

The arrival of torrential downpours follows a recent heatwave that affected various parts of the UK, resulting in dry conditions and several hosepipe bans being implemented. The dry ground from the heatwave will make flooding more probable and severe as it will struggle to absorb the excess water. The amber warning area spans a stretch of the south coast, London, and Cambridge, with a time frame from 04:00 BST to 11:00 on Saturday. The Met Office warns of the potential for 20 to 40mm of rain in an hour, accumulating to 70-100mm within a few hours, leading to floods in homes and businesses.

The warning also indicates the likelihood of lightning strikes, hail, and strong winds that may result in cancellations of trains and buses. Additional yellow weather warnings cover eastern, central, and northern England, as well as parts of eastern Scotland. The storm is anticipated to move inland, progressing northwards across England on Saturday before reaching Scotland by midday. Despite the heavy rainfall, it may not significantly alleviate drought conditions as the rain may run off quickly due to the dry soil, overwhelming local waterways and sewers.

Following last week’s heatwave, which brought water-related deaths and hosepipe bans in Yorkshire, Kent, and Sussex, Yorkshire’s hosepipe ban is expected to persist until winter. Flash flooding from thunderstorms after the 2022 summer heatwave in London and surrounding areas caused disruptions such as flooded roads and Tube stations, leading to cancellations and delays at Gatwick Airport
