Teenagers arrested after laser shone at helicopter and planes

In Liverpool, two teenagers have been apprehended for shining a laser pen at a police helicopter crew and planes flying over the city in a reckless manner. The incident occurred around midnight on Thursday when a green laser was aimed at a National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter from an address in West Derby. Subsequently, air traffic control at Liverpool John Lennon Airport reported that flights were also being targeted.

The Merseyside Police detained two boys, aged 16 and 13, at a residence on Haydn Road following the laser incidents. Cpt Paul Watts, who heads flight operations at NPAS, emphasized the severe consequences of distracting pilots and crews with lasers. He highlighted the dangers posed not only to individuals in the aircraft but also to those on the ground. Watts stressed that such actions are a serious offense, and NPAS teams collaborate closely with local law enforcement to ensure that individuals engaging in such risky behavior face legal consequences before causing harm to others.

The authorities are taking the matter seriously and are committed to bringing those responsible for shining lasers at aircraft to justice. The incidents in Liverpool serve as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with such actions and the need for strict enforcement against reckless behavior that puts lives at risk. By working in tandem with law enforcement agencies, NPAS aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and safeguard the safety of both air and ground occupants
