A youth has confessed to hurling a large seat from the top floor of an east London shopping center as part of an internet prank, narrowly avoiding hitting shoppers below. The incident, which took place at Westfield in Stratford on 1 March, was captured on video and quickly gained traction online. The teenager, along with another 15-year-old, faced legal consequences after their actions.
Appearing at Stratford Magistrates’ Court, the young perpetrator admitted to charges of criminal damage and recklessly causing a public nuisance. He has been given bail and is scheduled for sentencing on 13 August. The individual accused of filming the incident has denied any wrongdoing and is set to return to court on 24 September. During the court proceedings, footage of the incident was presented, depicting a hooded figure tossing a heavy blue seat over a glass barrier before fleeing the scene.
Prosecutor Elizabeth Ajayi emphasized the potentially disastrous consequences of such reckless behavior, noting that the seat was snatched from a communal area within the mall and flung from a significant height. The prosecution revealed that the defendants had engaged in similar stunts before, including throwing objects off bridges towards passing trains. Despite acknowledging their involvement during police interrogations, the security officer from Westfield highlighted the sense of unease among visitors following the incident. In a rather callous statement to the authorities, the teenager who threw the seat downplayed the severity of the act by claiming no one was injured.
While a previous charge of criminal damage endangering lives was dropped, the repercussions of their thoughtless actions have not been overlooked.
