Germany is making moves to toughen its laws to combat gangs involved in smuggling migrants to the UK by the end of the year, according to Downing Street. The proposed changes in German law aim to make it illegal to facilitate illegal migration to the UK.
Currently, it is not against the law in Germany to aid in people-smuggling if it is to a country outside the European Union, which, post-Brexit, includes the UK. The announcement by Chancellor Merz to make necessary alterations to German law received praise from UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The agreement between the UK and Germany also aims to address defense and security matters, with discussions planned on supporting Ukraine. A new agreement is set to boost UK defense exports, including Boxer armored vehicles and Typhoon jets, through joint export campaigns for co-produced equipment. Additionally, a new UK-Germany Business Forum is to be established to foster investment in both countries, leading to more jobs and economic growth. Commercial investments worth over £200 million are expected to be announced during the visit, with defense tech firm STARK creating 100 new jobs through its first expansion outside of Germany in Swindon
