Dagenham wildfire and two other grass fires under investigation

In London on Monday evening, three separate grass fires kept more than 200 firefighters busy as they battled to bring the blazes under control. One of the fires, which burned over eight hectares (20 acres), caused residents in Dagenham to evacuate their homes temporarily as the flames engulfed grass, shrubland, trees, fences, and garden furniture near Beam Parklands. Additionally, firefighters utilized wildfire beaters to combat a blaze that ravaged a area of grassland near Wingletye Lane, Hornchurch, and successfully extinguished a third fire at Walthamstow Marshes.

At the largest fire in Dagenham, about 125 firefighters worked tirelessly to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby houses. Station commander Matt Hayward emphasized the efforts made to protect residential areas, stating, “The fire had reached some garden fences, sheds, and garden furniture.” Jets and wildfire beaters played a crucial role in containing the flames and preventing further destruction. The installation of fire breaks by the local authority proved to be effective in halting the fire from reaching residential properties, according to LFB.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) remains vigilant as they investigate the cause of the wildfires, emphasizing the potential challenges posed by the warm and dry weather conditions. The brigade has called for Londoners to exercise caution and act responsibly to prevent future fires, especially since the dry weather increases the likelihood of fires rapidly spreading. LFB warned against the use of disposable barbecues in parks or fields, as well as on wooden decking in private areas, due to the close proximity of green spaces to residential properties in the city. With firefighters undergoing enhanced wildfire response training in preparation for a potentially challenging summer, LFB is gearing up for similar incidents as the season progresses
