A children’s camp set to take place in County Down has been called off due to objections raised by an Orange lodge over the participation of children from a GAA club. The North Down Cricket Club in Comber had organized the event with the aim of bringing together young people from different backgrounds, including those from East Belfast GAA. However, concerns were raised by a local Orange Lodge regarding the perceived encroachment of the GAA into the community, leading to the cancellation of the camp.
The cricket club, which has been a part of the community since 1857, emphasized the importance of inclusivity and diversity in sports. They had hoped to create a space where children could come together to enjoy cricket, try new activities, and have fun. The event was designed to involve various local sports and community groups, with the goal of fostering friendships through shared experiences. Despite these intentions, the club felt compelled to cancel the camp in light of negative reactions online that jeopardized its spirit.
In response, the Goldsprings of Comber Orange lodge expressed concerns about the historical and cultural affiliations of the GAA, particularly in relation to paramilitary activities. They emphasized the importance of inclusivity and respect for all traditions in shared spaces. Meanwhile, East Belfast GAA expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the event, noting that it was a missed opportunity to promote values of respect and unity through sports.
First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned the cancellation of the camp, stating that children should be able to play together without facing intolerance. Alliance assembly member Kellie Armstrong also criticized the decision, calling it a disgrace and emphasizing the importance of allowing children to participate in sports together regardless of sectarian differences. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of promoting inclusivity and unity in communities with diverse cultural and historical backgrounds
