UK heatwave ends as cooler weather and rain returns

The latest heat health alerts have expired in England following the conclusion of the third heatwave of the year, giving way to cooler and more unsettled weather. Temperatures are expected to be significantly lower on Monday, ranging between 18C and 24C throughout most of the UK. This return to more typical mid-July conditions comes after a period of uncharacteristically hot weather.

The change in weather is attributed to an area of low pressure bringing rain and cool air from the Atlantic. This shift follows a scorching three-day period where temperatures soared well above average, reaching 34.7C in Astwood Bank, Worcestershire, on Friday, 33.1C in Cardiff on Saturday, and 31.2C in Achnagart in the Scottish Highlands on Sunday. The first hosepipe ban of the year was also implemented on Friday, following a record-breaking warm June and the driest, sunniest spring in over a century.

While the majority of the UK experiences relief from the heat, south-east England will still observe warm conditions with highs of up to 28C, albeit below the official heatwave threshold. The cooler weather pattern is expected to persist into Tuesday, with heavier rain projected in certain regions like Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, Wales, and northern England. Despite a temporary dip in temperatures, the Met Office warns of increasingly frequent extreme weather events, as a new report links this trend to climate change impacts, affecting both urban areas and natural ecosystems
