'I found my brother in Australia, just in time to make memories'

Jess Basey-Fisher, a 53-year-old nurse living in Carleton St Peter in Norfolk, received shocking news six years ago from her father, Nicholas, as she held her mother’s ashes. Nicholas disclosed that Jess’s mother, Ann, had a secret – she had given birth to a baby boy before meeting him and put the child up for adoption.

With little information to go on, Jess embarked on a mission to find her long-lost brother. She knew that Ann had met a man at a ball at a US airbase in Norfolk and was later sent to London to give birth. After an extensive search spanning 15 years, Jess finally came across her brother’s birth record from September 1962 on the Ancestry website.

After Nicholas’s passing, Jess continued her search with the help of a social worker, who eventually found James, now known as Alistair Dalgliesh, through Facebook in 2021. The reunion between Jess and Alistair, who resides in Australia, was an emotional moment for both siblings, as they spoke for the first time and learned about each other’s lives.

Despite not actively seeking his birth family, Alistair expressed happiness at being found and shared the remarkable coincidence that his adoptive parents were a nurse and a GP, mirroring Jess’s own upbringing. The siblings shared stories, found similarities, and even discovered that their parents got married on Alistair’s birth date.

Shortly after their reunion, Alistair revealed to Jess that he had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Determined to support her newfound brother, Jess traveled to Australia to spend five weeks with him during his chemotherapy treatment. Alistair will visit Jess in Norfolk in October to meet the rest of their extended family, as they make the most of the time they have together
