A building collapse in Glasgow has led to roads being closed off and homes being evacuated. The incident occurred at a derelict tenement building at the corner of Kenmure Street and Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area. Former River City actor and musician Tom Urie, who narrowly avoided the collapse, likened the experience to being in an Indiana Jones movie. Thankfully, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched eight appliances to the scene, and there were no reported injuries.
The abandoned building had been in a state of disrepair for approximately five years following a fire that occurred during lockdown. Urie, a local resident, recounted his experience of hearing strange noises emanating from the building before witnessing its sudden collapse. He described the moment as harrowing yet awe-inspiring, acknowledging the frailty of the building’s facade as it crumbled before him.
Video footage captured on Urie’s mobile phone captured the dust clouds that enveloped the area following the collapse. Walls on one side of the building were left hanging precariously, a stark contrast to the building’s former grandeur. Concerns about the building’s stability had been circulating in the local community for some time, with residents expressing relief that the incident did not result in any casualties. The collapsed building was one of two structures that had been significantly damaged by fire in the same area years prior, prompting further scrutiny on the safety of neglected buildings in the neighborhood.
In the aftermath of the collapse, the affected area was cordoned off, and nearby residences were evacuated as a safety precaution. Firefighters remained on the scene until early morning to secure the area, allowing officials to assess the extent of the damage and potential risks posed by the collapsed building. With the community reeling from the sudden event, questions arose about the maintenance of derelict structures in the city and the measures necessary to prevent such incidents in the future
