Fifty-five arrests at Palestine Action ban protests

Protests erupted in London and Cardiff, resulting in a total of 55 arrests in response to the government’s decision to proscribe Palestine Action as a terror group. The Metropolitan Police made 41 arrests in London on suspicion of supporting the proscribed organization, with an additional arrest for common assault. South Wales Police arrested 13 individuals in Cardiff under the same suspicion of backing a proscribed group.

In London, two groups of protesters assembled in Parliament Square, displaying placards with messages opposing genocide and voicing support for Palestine Action. Demonstrators laid on top of each other as police officers conducted searches, seizing ID cards and handmade signs. Police intervened by carrying away some protesters and leading others into police vans, ultimately clearing the area by 14:30 BST.

Palestine Action has primarily targeted arms companies since the conflict in Gaza began. After activists vandalized two Voyager aircraft at RAF Brize Norton in June, the government moved to proscribe the organization. Subsequent arrests led to four individuals being remanded in custody on charges of conspiracy to commit criminal damage and entering a prohibited place with intent to harm UK interests.

Despite accusations of misusing legislation and questions about Palestine Action’s classification as a terrorist group, the government proceeded with the proscription. While critics and campaign groups continue to challenge the decision, protests are ongoing across the UK.
