Ruth said she had tried to take her own life because the church “allowed my abuser to have more opportunities to be with young people.”

“It did not help me,” she added. “It made things worse. It took away my faith because I don’t believe that a loving, caring God would have allowed the church to allow this to happen.”

A Church in Wales spokesperson said: “We deeply regret that the church failed to take action when first made aware of allegations against David Gedge. We fully accept that we let her down and should have supported her”

“The Church in Wales… is committed to learning the lessons of the past and to having safeguarding at the heart of its mission moving forward.”

Both Mark Dickey-Collas and Alisdair Adams have started their own proceedings against the Church in Wales in a bid to get compensation for the damage done by Pierce.
