A police officer at Manchester Airport has described feeling “absolutely terrified” after being punched in the face while trying to arrest an assault suspect. PC Lydia Ward suffered a broken nose during the incident at the Terminal 2 car park pay station area on July 23 last year. The accused, Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, and his brother, Muhammad Amaad, 26, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, deny the assault allegations.
PC Ward recounted the moment she was struck in the face with a “really forceful” blow, causing her to fall to the ground and losing consciousness. She and her colleagues approached Mr. Amaaz at a ticket machine following a report of an assault at a Starbucks cafe in T2 arrivals. The prosecution claims the brothers inflicted a “high level of violence” on the officers during the altercation.
Despite trying to restrain Mr. Amaaz, PC Ward recalled him kicking her colleague, leading to her attempting to intervene. She recounted being punched in the face, stating that she was “terrified” and had pressed her emergency radio button for assistance, which was knocked out by the impact. Additionally, she mentioned that bystanders in the area were filming the incident instead of offering help.
During the trial, Mr. Amaaz’s defense lawyer suggested that the defendant acted in self-defense, believing he was being attacked from behind. However, PC Ward responded that he could see she was a police officer and a female before striking her. Body-cam footage was presented to the jury showing a bloodied PC Ward being comforted by a colleague post-incident. Mr. Amaaz is accused of assaulting several officers and individuals, while Mr. Amaad faces charges of assaulting a police officer. Both defendants have denied the allegations as the trial continues
